A ten-vehicle pileup, likely caused by fog, has taken the life of a Paulding woman. The highway patrol investigated the crash on U.S. 24 near the Defiance-Paulding County line, just before 8am yesterday. 28 year old Ashley Messman of Paulding was travelling on Paulding County road 87, and attempted to cross route 24; when her SUV was struck by an eastbound tanker truck carrying ethanol, and driven by 41 year old Dale Jansens of Monroe, Michigan. The collision caused fatal injuries for Ashley Messman, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The tanker ruptured in the crash, spilling about 1,500 gallons of ethanol liquid into the median. This accident would lead to 7 more crashes on the highway resulting in 9 individuals being transported to area hospitals for treatment of non life-threatening injuries. The highway was closed for hours due to debris covering lanes of traffic in both directions.
